Kindergarten Days at Adams Street Branch

Monday, August 23rd:

Hello, everyone.  This is Guy Harris, the children’s librarian at Adams Street Branch.  Our summer programming is slowly winding down, as we all prepare for the new school year.  But before we do, we have the annual Kindergarten Days party coming up, co-hosted by the library and Countdown to Kindergarten – the City of Boston organization that helps new kindergartners get prepared for their first day at school.

The party typically entails several dozen kids – and their older/younger siblings – running around in yellow t-shirts, doing crafts, eating pizza, participating in games, and listening to a story time (done by me while everyone cleans up in the background.)  It’s loud; boisterous; and generally a great deal of fun.  (Some of you have probably already attended or volunteered in the past – you know what I mean.)

This year, the party is on the 23rd of August, from 6 – 7:30pm.  If you are able to volunteer that evening, we would love to have your help. Volunteers would mostly be helping us set up, and break down the party, plus running games or serving food.  If you are interested, let me know, via phone or email, and I’ll make sure you’ll have fun that day.  (Plus, you get an adult sized yellow shirt, too!)  We will have the party outside, weather permitting – but we’ll be prepared to jam everything into the library if we get another sudden summer shower, like last year.

Thank you for considering volunteering.  Hope you are finishing up a great summer.  Take care.

Bicycling Magazine's BikeTown is coming to Boston!

Friday, August 27th:

In 2003, the editor of Bicycling Magazine wondered if a bicycle could change

someone's life. After giving away thousands of bicycles to people all over the U.S., the

answer is clearly YES! People have lost weight, connected with their family, been able

to beat diabetes, saved money, overcome depression, renewed marriage vows and dozens

of other stories. For 2010, BikeTown is going to eight cities: Cleveland - Indianapolis -

Denver - Boston - Minneapolis - Los Angeles (with Best Buddies) - New Orleans -

Charleston. BikeTown, MetLife and Jamis Bicycles will be giving away 31 new

bicycles on Friday August 27 at Boston City Hall Plaza during Bike Friday. Submit a 50-

word essay about how a bicycle could change someone's life

at http://www.bicycling.com/enter-biketown

Subject: Autism Fundraiser & Comedy Night‏

As many of you know, and for those of you who are not aware, it's been a year since our son, Dano, was diagnosed with autism.  It has been a busy year with therapies, 30 hours per week, and doctor appointments, but he is making wonderful progress.  He turns 3 at the end of August and he continues to make great strides with his speech and overall communication.  We are lucky in the sense that Dano is on the higher functioning end of the spectrum.  I have done a lot of reading over the past year and I was shocked at the increasing impact of autism in today's world.  1 in 70 boys born will be diagnosed with autism. Autism is a brain disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.  When diagnosed early, there are many great therapies that can minimize the effects and help get a child on the path to a wonderful life.
Kathy and I have decided to participate in the Greater Boston "Walk Now for Autism" fundraiser event on September 26th, to raise money for Autism Speaks.  Autism Speaks has grown into the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, dedicated to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and a cure for autism; increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders; and advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. We are hoping to do our part in helping.  Our goal is to raise at least $2,000 but hoping to hit or stretch goal of raising $5,000.
I know a lot of you already support great causes like cancer, diabetes, etc...so anything you would be willing to donate to our team for the Boston Autism Speaks Walk would be greatly appreciated.  You can donate in two ways.  The first is a general donation to team DC5, named after our son, Daniel Clark V, via the below link to our team's website.
www.walknowforautismspeaks.org/greaterboston/dano
The other way to donate is to join us on September 18th, at our Comedy Night Fundraiser.  All proceeds from this event will go directly to our team.
The details for the show are as follows:
When:  Saturday, September 18, 2010

Time:  Doors open at 7:30, show to start at 8:30
Where: Teachers Union Hall,

180 Mt Vernon St
, Dorchester, (hall is next to Bayside Expo Center)
Admission: $20 per ticket,  Tables of 10 can be reserved by contacting Kathy via email or calling/texting

617-584-8336  617-584-8336

Featuring: Mike Baker, Mark Riley, Chris Bilello and others
Cash only bar

You can buy tickets to the comedy night directly from Kathy, or me, at: 18 Helena Road, Dorchester, MA 02122 or reach out to us via email at dclark15@msn.com or kathyclark9@msn.com. You can also use the above link and pay directly to the Autism Walk's website.  If you use the website link, we created a team member on Team DC5 called "comedy night fundraiser".  You can click on the link and make your donation for a ticket on that page.  It will allow us to keep track of the headcount for the upcoming comedy show.
Please feel free to pass this email along to anyone else you think may be interested.  It will be a fun night to have a lot of laughs, good way to catch up with old friends and raise some money for a good cause.

Thanks in advance for your consideration and hope to see you on September 18th!
Dan & Kathy Clark
