The Monsters are back!

The Monsters are back! This program provides an introduction to competitive swimming in a fun and nurturing way. It is open to swimmers ages 6—15, and no prior experience is required! All swimmers must pass a
minimum skills test (our deep end test). Practices are held 3 days a week, swimmers need to attend two to
be eligible to swim in the weekly swim meet on Fridays. Our team will compete in the BCYF swim league
and will swim against other Community Centers around the city. This is a great chance to enhance your child’s
swimming skills as well as learn a new sport, while making new friends.

The Murphy Community Center proudly offers a swim team for children from ages 6 to 15 where children can swim 3 nights each week from January through April. The Monsters will learn butterfly, backstroke, breastroke and freestyle swimming strokes and will also participate in swim meets with other community centers.

Our goals are to teach the Monsters how to swim and compete in a fun and supportive environment while helping them learn more about respect, healthy peer relationships, teamwork, self-esteem and keeping their bodies healthy.

Eligibility:
Monsters must pass the deep end test to be eligible for the swim team. The deep end test requires that a Monster swim proper freestyle stroke the full 25 yard length of the pool, tread water properly for 30 seconds and swim the full 25 yard length of the pool with proper freestyle stroke back to the starting point. The Leahy-Holloran Community Center offers swim lessons for those Monsters who are not ready for the swim team. Registration is required.
Please click here to learn more or call the center and ask for Maryellen.

Monster Parent Rules:
Monsters Parents are not allowed on the deck during practices. The coach is not available before practice. If a Monster parent would like to speak to the coach, please wait until AFTER practice. If you do not have time after practice and would like to email, please contact Maryellen McDonough @
leahyhollorancc@gmail.com

Swim Meet Transportation:
If you would prefer your Monster to ride in the van as opposed to in another Monster Parent's car, please let the coach know your request. Every effort will be made to honor your wishes, but the van's seating is limited.

Monster Parents are Encouraged to Participate:
If a Monster Parent would like to help with the swim team, there are plenty of opportunities during the swim meets to time the Monsters and cheer for them. Monster Parents who are timing should be on the deck before the meet starts while Monsters Parents who cheer for the Monsters should be in the balcony cheering loudly. We look forward to seeing you at the meets and encourage you to support your Monsters! GO MONSTERS!

Monster Rules:
Teamwork requires both personal achievement and a collective group effort on a regular basis. At the Murphy Monster Swim Team we believe that each Monster's development and achievement is enhanced through teamwork.

In order for this team to work effectively, Monsters MUST attend at least 2 of the 3 practices to be able to compete in league meets on Friday evenings. A Monster who competes in another sport is excused from one full practice per week if he/she is participating in that other sport on Tuesday or Thursday during Monster practice time. Please let the coach know ahead of time.

All Monsters must be available at the beginning and end of swim practice to put in and take out lanelines.

Behavior:
Safety, teamwork and respect for all people and property are the most important aspects of this team. Monsters and Monster Parents must demonstrate these aspects and follow the rules of the Murphy.
